Competences:

KWS LOCHOW GMBH (KWL) is one of the leading plant breeding companies in Europe with core competence in cereal breeding and with barley and wheat breeding programs in Germany, France and UK.  Due to long-term expertise in breeding of self pollinated  varieties, population and hybrid rye varieties, KWL is leader of the rye seed market in most European countries and hold a strongest position on wheat and winter barley seed market in Germany. The company has excellent greenhouse facilities, as well as two in-house biotech labs offering marker-assisted selection and double-haploid production, to strongly support the variety development. There is special knowledge in the breeding department with regard to handling plant material, inbred lines, populations, production of selfed progenies, SSD and DH lines and assessing phenotypic traits in multi-site experiments. Intensive multilocational yield tests in several thousand plots as well as disease scoring of several thousand genotypes are performed each year as the basis of strong selection procedures. KWL test site organisation well spread over West, Middle and Eastern Europe. Many of the company’s varieties introduced into the EU market have made a significant impact, not just in terms of market share, but also in yield improvement, quality and disease resistance.

Role:

In WP2, KWL will in collaboration with IPK develop the large population for high resolution mapping in barley. KWL will be able to use the project resources to develop MAS in barley in the framework of other programs.

Staff members’ profile:

The head of the company owned biotechnology group, Dr. V. Korzun has more than 15 years experience in development and application of molecular markers in cereal crops. His group participated in several national and EU R&D projects related to applied genetics and genomics (EUREKA CEREQUAL, GABI-MALT, GABI-CANADA, EU-BIOEXPLOIT, ERA-PG CEREHEALTH and GFP) and intensively involved. V. Korzun is author about 120 scientific papers in scientific journals and books. He is the referee in Theor. Appl. Genetics, Genome, Molecular Genetics and Genomics, Euphytica, Plant Breeding, Journal of Applied Genetics and Cellular & Molecular Biology Letters.
