Universita degli Studi di Milano (UMIL)

Location : Milan / Italy
Leader : Laura ROSSINI
Website : www.unimi.it/ENG

Competences:

This research group is a partnership between University of Milan (UMIL) and Parco Tecnologico Padano (PTP), a non-profit foundation sponsored by public and private organisations and based in Lodi, Italy. The participating scientists have been involved in plant genetic and genomic research for several years. Work on Triticeae species (wheat and barley) has focussed on construction of molecular marker-based genetic maps, genetic and molecular dissection of developmental processes, comparative genomics and candidate gene approaches, molecular analyses of domestication processes. Main competences include genetic analysis of qualitative and quantitative traits, genotyping analyses, linkage mapping, high-throughput genomics and TILLING, cloning techniques, functional and comparative genomics, and bioinformatics.

Role:

Leading WP3 and within this WP, fine mapping and positional cloning of the uniculm4 tillering locus on barley chromosome 3H (WP3). Training of students/visiting scientists in high through-put genotyping (WP6)

Staff members’ profile:

Dr. Laura Rossini (UMIL) is a research scientist at the Faculty of Agriculture in Milan. After obtaining a degree in Biology and a PhD in Genetics from the University of Milan, she worked as a post-doc at the Dept. of Plant Sciences in Oxford, UK, on the genetic and molecular analysis of photosynthetic differentiation in monocots. She currently coordinates research projects on barley developmental genetics and lectures in genetics and breeding.
Prof. Francesco Salamini (UMIL/PTP) is Professor of Genetic Technologies at UMIL and Scientific Director of PTP. From 1985 to 2004 he was Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungsforschung in Köln and Honorary Professor at the University of Köln (Germany). He has considerable expertise in plant molecular genetics, molecular breeding and applied genomics. He is member of national and international academies and scientific boards and of the editorial boards of international journals. He authored over 530 articles and 4 books.
